Yesterday, we brought Maggie to her first week long (ok, 5 nights) camp. She’ll be horseback riding every day, and she is so excited. She had a moment or two of being really nervous and claiming she didn’t want to go, but once we started packing, the fears left her and the excitement took over.

Bringing her suitcase to the trailers with Stagg

Getting her horseback riding evaluation

Katie, however, had issues with the drop off. She suddenly decided that she REALLY wanted to stay at camp. She had answers for everything: no clothes? no problem. She’d just wear what she had on for a week. She didn’t have to change her underwear or brush her teeth. No bathing suit? The pool would just be her shower and washing machine. And she would just go sleep with Maggie since she didn’t have a sleeping bag.

I, of course, was the big party-pooper, pointing out that she had never had a single sleep over when Maggie wasn’t with her, and that some of the sleep overs she had tried ended with me picking her up early. No camping for Katie until next year.

Katie's reaction to my no camping edict

Check in went smoothly, and the girls were thrilled to find their assigned bunks in their cabin. They made their beds, stored their clothes and were ready for us to leave.

Happy Girls

I think it will be a good week!

Yesterday was Maggie’s last Brownie meeting of the year. She was very sad to have it over, and is already looking forward to next year’s activities. They’ve been finishing up activities for the Try-Its they’ve been working on. Maggie loves both the activities themselves and the badges she gets to wear on her vest. In a couple weeks, we’ll have her Court of Awards and she will get more patches to add to her collection.

Brownies lasts for 3 years, so the vest she has is currently large enough for her and Katie to wear at the same time. On the back, she gets patches from some of the other Girl Scout activities she’s participated in during the year. We’ve had Father-Daughter camping, where she and Stagg spent the weekend in a pop up camper in North Georgia and Mother-Daughter camping, where Maggie and I camped in a cabin in South Georgia. She has a patch from the Girl Scout Day Camp she attended last year, and one for the Camporee where I helped her troop leader manage 6 first grade girls for a weekend of camping. Her back is becoming a map of Girl Scouting fun times, and she is happy to see the memories.

This was her first year selling Girl Scout Cookies, and although she made the minimum to get that badge, she wasn’t overly interested in selling more to earn more of the prizes. Initially, she had a goal of 500 boxes so she could earn the iPod Shuffle she has been pining for, but her interest in going door to door was simply not great enough to get the boxes sold.

Next year will be a new Girl Scout year, and I think we are both looking forward to it. Rumor has it that the girls will be taking a little more initiative in choosing which Try-Its the troop earns. I’m not sure, but I have a feeling the one Maggie chooses will have something to do with animals.
