Tooth Drama

This morning, after months of wiggling, twisting, wishing and more wiggling, Maggie’s third tooth finally came out.  Because of this, she chose not to go to swim team practice where she might get blood in the pool.  This is a happy day.

We cleaned the tooth. We held the tooth.  Katie held the tooth to see what it felt like outside a mouth. We oohed and aahed appropriately over both the old tooth and the new one that is coming in.

Moments ago, Maggie jumped out of bed because she had forgotten her tooth fairy book, which held her precious tooth. Then, she jumped up again in tears because her tooth was missing.

I was about to suggest that I write the tooth fairy and tell her that the tooth really did come out, but we lost it somewhere along the way when I noticed Katie smiling in her bed.  This was not an innocent smile. When I asked her if she knew where Maggie’s tooth was, her smile got brighter as she shook her head.  Luckily for me, right now, the thrill of showing off what she’d done is still outweighing the desire to get away with it.

She had taken the tooth from Maggie’s special pouch — which was doubled over inside a very tight pocket that was attached to the front of her special tooth fairy book — and put it under her pillow. She said she wanted to see what it felt like to have a tooth under her pillow.  I very quickly assured her that the tooth fairy would know it wasn’t her tooth and if she found someone else’s tooth under her pillow not only would the true owner get the prize, but Katie would not get prizes for her teeth when she eventually loses them.

Thankfully, she looked horrified.
