This morning, the swim team put on a Mini Meet for the kids who practice with the team but don’t get to swim in the meets. There are 5 four year olds, a couple 5 year olds and a handful of 6, 7 & 8 year olds who are new swimmers.
Katie has been in a tizzy about this meet since I first mentioned it. All week, she’s ben flip flopping with absolute certainty that she was going to win everything and leave the boys eating her bubbles or that there was no way she was going to get in the water and even try.
In the end, the excitement over getting a ribbon won out over the fear of possibly having to talk to one of the coaches. She came in second in both the 25 freestyle and the relay, and took first for the backstroke. I give her special props because she swam all three lengths of the pool unassisted, where the kids she swam against needed some help staying afloat.
After the free swim that followed the meet, Katie told me she talked to Coach Jillian. I asked her what she said and she told me her half of the conversation: “what?” Apparently, Jillian told her she was going to throw Katie in. Can you picture a shy Katie?
